What Happens During a School Physical?

The school year is only weeks away from beginning, and while local school districts may be putting together plans for how schooling will function, your child will still need an updated physical on file with the nurse. Physicals are required each year from kindergarten through the first year of college and must be put on file within 30 days of the first day of school.

What is a school physical?

A school physical is performed each year in order to check your child’s growth and detect any conditions that may affect your child’s ability to learn and participate in classes. From acute illnesses that can cause chronic fatigue to injuries that may affect their ability to process information. During your physical, the following will be performed:

  • Vital signs, hearing and vision will be checked
  • Vision and hearing test
  • Examination of ears, nose and throat for signs of illness or conditions requiring treatment or assessment
  • Scoliosis check of the back
  • Review of medical history, including recent treatments, and administration of vaccinations required to be in-date

When is a sports physical required?

A sports physical is required prior to the first practice of any sports season put on by schools or communities. A sports physical allows the player to have any undetected injuries sustained during the past season to be diagnosed and treated before it could potentially be injured further. Sports physicals can be performed on a walk-in basis at AFC Urgent Care North Bergen seven days a week.

What should I do if my child requires treatment?
