How Can I Rehydrate My Body?

July 1, 2022

Dehydration can become life-threatening if it’s not taken care of on a hot day. There are easy ways you can maintain hydration throughout the day, but it’s important to be aware of the signs of dehydration. AFC Urgent Care North Bergen provides dehydration treatment to patients. If you are suffering from symptoms and can’t seem to hydrate, our providers can use intravenous fluids to help out your body.

 Symptoms of Dehydration

As you become more dehydrated, certain symptoms will manifest because the body pulls water away to support your main organs. There are beginning symptoms that are common and easy to diagnose. They’re also easy to treat. More severe symptoms, however, may require more work.

Some common dehydration symptoms include:

  • Dark-colored or little to no urine
  • Dry mouth or feeling thirsty
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Crying with no tears, especially in children

If someone is exercising, especially outdoors, or has a chronic condition, they are more likely to get dehydrated faster than others. Someone who is sick with vomiting and/or diarrhea will lose fluids quickly if they’re not replenishing them.

Rehydration Tips

Drink Water

Water is the most effective way to rehydrate and maintain your hydration. It’s recommended to drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. If you are exercising, drinking alcohol, or spending time in the sun, it’s important to drink more than the recommended amount.

Eat High-Water Foods

Some fruits and vegetables have high amounts of water, so you don’t need to only drink water. 20% of our daily water intake comes from foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Some foods with high amounts of water include watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers, celery, zucchini, and tomatoes.

Take a Break from the Heat

The sun is at its hottest and strongest between 10 am and 2 pm. Try to avoid spending time outdoors at this time, especially when it’s extremely hot out. If your home does not have access to an air conditioner, try visiting local places such as the library, movie theaters, recreation centers, and malls.

Fluid Replacement

Sports drinks are high in electrolytes, so these are excellent alternatives to water when it comes to dehydration. If you are spending a lot of time outdoors or exercising, you are likely to be sweating a lot. This is where fluid replacement comes in handy.

Sports drinks are beneficial for fluid replacement, as the electrolytes can hydrate your body faster than just water.

Be Mindful During Workouts

No matter what the workout is, it’s important to stay hydrated. This includes before, during, and after exercise. Drink enough water at least two hours before your workout and up to 30 minutes after it’s completed.
