The common cold seems to hit at the most inconvenient of times – right before a big project, exam, or the holidays. Prevention is the key to staying healthy all year long and these easy tips could be just what you need to keep colds, flu and other illnesses at bay. Flu season is also here and the change in weather can be a factor in coming down with an illness. AFC Urgent Care Malden is here to give you some advice to prepare for the cold before it gets here!

Wash Hands Frequently

Frequently washing your hands is one of the best steps you can take to stay healthy and avoid spreading germs to your friends and family. Wash hands for at least 20 seconds each time including the backs of hands, between fingers, and beneath fingernails. If you are taking public transportation then it is important that you bring hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizer is a fast, effective alternative for when you can’t get to a sink. If you have been outside for a long time or in contact with multiple people it is also a good idea to keep hand sanitizer with you for a quick way to get rid of germs.

Take Time for Rest & Relaxation

With today’s busy, on-the-move lifestyle it’s easy to become highly stressed and sleep-deprived. Lack of sleep and relaxation can wreak havoc on your immune system, leaving you more susceptible to colds. Studies show at least 8 hours of sleep a night strengthens immunity and has the bonus effect of relieving stress levels. There are other ways you can relax other than just getting the correct amount of sleep. You can listen to some music, play some video games or even hang out with friends and families. The mind needs a break from a tough day just as much as the body.

Eat Healthily

Many of our favorite delicious and convenient foods are filled with fats, sugars, and carbs that can compromise immune health and make it harder for your body to protect itself from bacteria and viruses. A healthy, balanced diet packed with nutrient-rich fruits and veggies will give your body a strong defense against colds. Not only will eating healthy help you against germs but it will also make you feel better and give you some more energy to make it through your day!
