Symptoms We Treat, and When to Come In

At AFC, we treat the ordinary respiratory illnesses that make you feel rough for a week or two, and the sinus infections that sometimes follow them. Common cold symptoms and sinus infection indications include:

  • Cough, productive of phlegm or dry
  • Blocked or runny nose, and congestion that won't clear
  • Sinus pressure or pain across the face, forehead or teeth
  • Sore throat alongside cold symptoms
  • Post-nasal drip and a hoarse voice
  • Feeling generally unwell, with a mild fever
  • Chest congestion

When It's Worth Being Seen

Most everyday colds clear up on their own within a week to ten days, so visiting us on day two usually won't change the course of the virus. However, it's definitely worth coming in if:

  • Symptoms have lasted more than ten days without improving
  • You started to get better and then got noticeably worse again
  • The sinus pain is severe or focused on one side
  • You have a fever that keeps returning
  • A cough has lasted more than three weeks
  • You have asthma, COPD, or another lung condition, in which case come in sooner

When to Go to the Emergency Room Instead

If any of the following symptoms describe you or your child, go directly to the emergency room.

  • You're struggling to breathe, or are breathless at rest
  • You have chest pain or pressure
  • Your lips or face look blue
  • You're coughing up blood
  • You're confused or unusually drowsy
  • You have a stiff neck with a severe headache and fever

How We Diagnose and Treat

During your visit, your provider will evaluate what kind of illness you're dealing with and what the most effective course of treatment is. Here's what our diagnosis and treatment process looks like.

  1. History and Examination

Your provider will ask about how long you've been experiencing cold symptoms, how they've changed, and take a look at your ears, nose, throat, and chest.

  2. Testing Where It Helps

We can test for flu, COVID, and strep, which can be ruled in or out, so you leave your visit with the right diagnosis and an effective treatment plan.

  3. What It Is, and What Will Help

If you're dealing with a virus, proper symptom care is key to recovery. If it turns out to be a bacterial infection, we'll make sure you leave with the prescription you need.

  4. What to Watch For

Your provider will let you know what symptoms should improve and by when, along with specific warning signs that would necessitate a follow-up.

Testing for Cold and Sinus Symptoms

Early on, the flu, COVID, and strep can all look and feel like a bad cold. Testing during your visit takes away the guesswork, so you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Flu Testing

— about 15 min

A quick nasal swab checks for the flu virus, with results ready in about 15 minutes.

COVID-19 Testing

— about 15 min

A quick nasal swab checks for COVID-19, with results ready in about 15 minutes.

Strep Testing

— about 5 min

A quick throat swab checks for strep, with results back in about five minutes.

Chest X-Ray When Indicated

A chest X-ray may be ordered, for example if your provider suspects pneumonia. Availability may vary by clinic.

How Long Do Cold Symptoms Last?

Knowing what a normal recovery looks like is the fastest way to spot when cold and sinus symptoms need medical attention.

  • Runny or blocked nose: expect 7 to 10 days. Come see us if it hasn't improved after 10 days.
  • Sore throat: usually lasts 3 to 5 days. Be seen if it's severe, or paired with fever and no cough.
  • Cough: lingers for 2 to 3 weeks. Come in if it lasts longer than 3 weeks.
  • Sinus pain or pressure: usually lasts 7 to 10 days. Seek care if it lasts longer, becomes severe, or gets worse after feeling better.
  • Fatigue: usually lasts 1 to 2 weeks. Come in if it drags on much longer or worsens.

When Does a Cold Become a Sinus Infection?

Most sinus congestion during a cold is viral and clears on its own. Two patterns suggest it's turned bacterial and may need pharmacological treatment:

  • Symptoms last more than ten days without starting to improve
  • Symptoms improved, then clearly got worse again, with a returning fever or worsening pain

Green or yellow mucus on its own doesn't necessarily mean it's bacterial, which is the most common misunderstanding about sinus infections. Color changes are normal partway through an ordinary cold.

Will I Be Given Antibiotics?

Only if you need them. Antibiotics work on bacteria and do nothing to improve a virus, and most coughs, colds, and sinus congestion are viral. Taking them anyway won't shorten the illness and can cause side effects.

If your symptoms fit the pattern of a bacterial infection, you'll leave with a prescription. If they don't, your provider will suggest the most effective treatment.

Cost and Insurance

We bill most insurance. A visit for cold or sinus symptoms is billed as an office visit, so what you pay depends on your plan.

If you're paying for yourself, a visit at this clinic starts at $190.

Frequently Asked Questions About Colds and Sinus Infections

How long should a cold last?

Most cold symptoms last about seven to ten days, though a cough can hang on for two to three weeks. If your cold symptoms have lasted longer than that without improving, it's worth coming into your nearest AFC clinic.

Do I need antibiotics for a sinus infection?

Usually not. Most sinus congestion during a cold is viral and clears up on its own. Antibiotics help when symptoms last beyond ten days without improving, or when you got better and then clearly got worse again.

Does green mucus mean I need antibiotics?

No. Color changes in mucus are a normal part of an ordinary cold and don't tell you whether it's bacterial. How long it's lasted matters much more than what color it is.

Is this a cold, the flu, or COVID?

Early on, cold, flu, and COVID symptoms look alike. Flu tends to come on suddenly with fever and body aches, while a cold builds gradually. We can test for flu and COVID during your visit to determine which one you're dealing with and recommend the appropriate course of treatment.

Could this be allergies instead?

Possibly, particularly if your symptoms are seasonal, itchy, and appear without a fever. A provider can assess your symptoms and tell you what it looks like.

Do I need an appointment?

No, you do not need an appointment to come in. Walk into your nearest AFC clinic seven days a week, or book a time online.
