After a very long and harsh winter, nothing feels better than getting out of your home to enjoy the summer weather. While enjoying your outdoor activities, it is extremely important that you are aware of your surroundings. Those who work outdoors are particularly vulnerable in coming into contact with poison ivy, so it’s best to know how to prevent further spreading of the rash and how you can treat the discomfort.

After coming in contact with poison ivy, you should do the following:

  1. Immediately rinse your skin with warm, soapy water
  2. Wash your clothing and everything that may have come into contact with the plant
  3. Do not scratch, this can lead to infection

Here are a few at-home treatments you should follow:

  1. Consider using a calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream
  2. Apply cool compresses to the itchy skin
  3. Consider taking antihistamine pills

If the rash continues to spread and does not get better within a couple days, stop by AFC Malden 7 days a week, no appointment necessary, for poison ivy treatments and other acute illnesses or injuries.
