What is meningitis?

Meningitis occurs when there is an infection of the meninges, the protective membranes that surround the cells of the brain and spinal cord. It's commonly caused by viruses, but can also be caused by bacteria or fungi.

Viral meningitis is the most common and is usually less severe than bacterial or fungal meningitis. Bacterial meningitis is the most severe. It causes the most severe symptoms and complications, which can lead to brain damage, hearing loss, or even death.

Meningitis is usually spread through contact with respiratory secretions or saliva. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated food or water.

Symptoms of Meningitis

Meningitis symptoms vary depending on the cause. Viral meningitis symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, and vomiting.

If you find yourself with these symptoms, you should see a doctor right away. Bacterial meningitis can cause the same symptoms as viral meningitis but may also include confusion, seizures, and coma.

What is the Meningitis vaccine?

The meningitis vaccine is a vaccine that helps protect against bacterial meningitis. There are two types of meningitis vaccines available in the United States: the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) and the serogroup B meningococcal vaccine (MPSV4).

The vaccine is made of parts of the bacteria that cause meningitis. The vaccine helps the body build immunity against bacteria. It does this by causing the body to produce antibodies. Antibodies are proteins that help fight infection.

Who should get it?

It's recommended for all adolescents aged 11-12 years to receive a meningitis vaccine, as well as people aged 2-55 years who are at increased risk for meningococcal disease. MPSV4 is recommended for people aged 55 years and older.

Who should not get it?

You should not get the meningitis vaccine if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the vaccine.

What are the side effects of the Meningitis vaccine?

The most common side effect of the meningitis vaccine is soreness and redness at the injection site. Additional side effects include fever, headache, and nausea.

Severe allergic reactions to the vaccine are rare but can occur. Always let your doctor know if you have any allergies to medications and seek medical attention if you find yourself beginning a reaction immediately.
