Common Nutrition Mistakes

April 5, 2022

Nutrition is a vital part of everyday life, and what we eat affects energy, mood, and weight. It isn’t always easy to know what to eat, and it can be just as hard to find reliable information. There are a few common mistakes that people regularly make that hinder their efforts at healthy nutrition.

The health of our community is our main priority at AFC North Bergen. Learn more about nutrition today and visit our center for health resources, or visit our urgent care for medical treatment.

Cheat Meals

A cheat meal is usually a delicious snack or a very unhealthy meal choice made in place of a diet choice. Many dieters think that having a “bad” meal will ruin a diet, but this isn’t true. It is better to diet and have a bad meal every once in a while than to feel like it’s not worth dieting at all. A cheat meal doesn’t ruin a diet and can be used to maintain an otherwise healthy diet for even longer.

Supplements

Supplements are not necessary to maintain healthy nutrition though they can be a valuable tool to try and help support a healthy diet. The body uses healthy whole foods much better than supplements and can subsist on food alone. Supplements should be used when a medical professional advises that a deficit exists that requires specific action.

Food Quality

Even the best food can be unhealthy if eaten the wrong way. While whole foods are necessary for a proper diet, calorie counting is also important. Healthy foods, like anything else, should be eaten in moderation and not in excess. Weight loss requires calorie balancing so putting the right amount of the good stuff in matters.

Junk Food

While calories help maintain weight goals, what the body is using for fuel matters. Staying within calories goals but only eating junk food can lead to many health problems. It may also be harder to maintain weight and exercise goals when eating junk foods. Healthy whole foods often make dieting easier as they support mood, sleep and exercise recovery. There must be a balance between counting calories and eating healthy foods to maintain proper nutrition.

Protein

Protein may be the most important part of nutrition, and it certainly is necessary for exercise and is used heavily by athletes and bodybuilders. Protein supplies the muscles with the fuel to grow and helps maintain the strength of bones. Protein serves as both building blocks and energy for the body. Protein, especially low-fat protein, is generally healthy and serves as a filling replacement for unhealthy alternatives in meals and snacks.

Frozen Foods

Frozen foods can be just as nutritious as fresh foods. It is better to have a freezer full of healthy options to use regularly than it is to have to be running out of fresh, healthy choices constantly. Freezing is a way to maintain foods longer and should not affect their quality or nutritional makeup. Use healthy frozen food options as a tool to maintain a consistent diet.

Eating Fat

Fat is a complicated nutrient. It has a reputation for being “bad” for a diet, but this isn’t necessarily true. Natural fats and healthy fats should be part of a wholesome diet. They help support brain and immune health and promote the absorption of other nutrients. Fats should be eaten in moderation, but overall are more healthy than artificial replacements.

Natural Sugar

Natural sugar comes from things like honey or fruit juice. These are natural, can be healthy, and should be a part of a well-rounded diet. The sugar from these natural sources can still be harmful in any case. Natural sugar should not be seen as inherently healthy as it is still sugar. Excessive amounts of sugar can lead to blood sugar problems. It is best to have natural sugars with fiber present, like in a piece of fruit, to slow absorption and regulate levels.

Remember

Eating healthy isn’t easy, but there are ways to make it a little bit simpler. Following these tips may help make better choices that lead to longer adherence to a proper diet. Keeping these common mistakes in mind can be invaluable when one of these challenging but everyday dietary situations arises.
