Sun damage can take years to build up, so it’s up to you to protect your skin now from the sun and prevent any further harm. It is important to be aware, especially during the next couple of months, of how strong the sun is and how only a few minutes outside can cause sunburn.

Here are some tips on how you can prevent sunburns:

  • The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm – try to limit exposure during these hours.
  • If you happen to be outside during these peak hours, you should wear the proper sunscreen and apply every two hours. Sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher is highly recommended. Be sure to re-apply every two hours and more often if you are excessively sweating or swimming.
  • Wear the appropriate clothing. A wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and light colored long sleeve shirts and pants are best at blocking out the sun. If you are at the beach with no shade in sight, grab an umbrella and take a break from the sun every 20 minutes!

Be proactive about protecting your skin from sun damage. Always wear sunscreen, even on overcast days because even though the sun is being blocked by clouds, it is still getting through!
