A cold typically lasts anywhere from three to fourteen days. Allergies last as long as the allergen is around, which could be a day or months. Colds are common in winter months but you can catch a cold any time in the year. Allergies occur during the time that the allergen is around. For most, this is spring and summer, but could be year-round.
Symptoms of a cold usually onset around two to three days after the virus. Allergy symptoms occur almost immediately. There is slight variation in symptoms. Allergies are accompanies by an occasional cough, itchy watery eyes, and a runny or stuffy nose. Mucus during allergies is typically clear. Cold symptoms include a cough, body aches, sore throat, fatigue, and a runny or stuffy nose. Mucus is typically yellow in colds. You may also experience itchy watery eyes or a fever. Allergies will never come with a fever or aches.
