Side Effects of the Flu Shot

November 7, 2022

Not only is the holiday season upon us, but the season for influenza as well. Influenza (the flu) is a common, contagious viral illness that affects approximately 1 in 5 people each year. The symptoms can leave you feeling unwell for weeks, and can be potentially severe for some groups of people. The best way to prevent contracting flu is to receive your annual flu shot.

Flu vaccination is safe for everyone over six months of age, but may leave a few uncomfortable side effects. Although the side effects are normal, and generally mean that the protective antibodies in the shot are working, some people may be allergic to flu vaccination. Knowing the difference between side effects and allergic reactions can go a long way in ensuring your overall health and wellness is protected. Visit AFC Urgent Care Lyndhurst for your family’s flu shots and flu treatment with no appointment necessary.

Common Flu Shot Side Effects

Similar to other medicines, the flu vaccine causes side effects for some people. The side effects are typically mild and last only a day or two. There is nothing to worry about if you’re feeling a general sense of sickness after your shot– it’s normal! Side effects let us know that the vaccine is protecting your body’s immune system and teaching it how to protect itself from the disease.

Common side effects to a flu shot may include:

  • A painful and tender feeling in the arm
  • Soreness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting
  • Mild fever

How Long Do Side Effects Last?

Side effects to the flu vaccine usually last one to two days. It’s important to note that it is common to develop a fever after you get a flu shot. Mild fever can develop within 48 hours of the vaccination, and will go away after 48 hours of starting. We recommend patients take over the counter fever reducer to alleviate symptoms, as well as lots of rest and fluids. However, if your fever starts more than 48 hours after the vaccination, or lasts longer than 48 hours, you should contact the walk-in clinic at AFC Lyndhurst. This could be a sign that you’re dealing with a different infection, or that you possibly are experiencing an allergic reaction to the shot.

Signs of an Allergic Reaction

As mentioned, some people may be allergic to flu vaccination. Although rare, it can happen especially if you have never been vaccinated against the flu before. So how do you distinguish between common side-effects and an allergic reaction? By examining the severity of the symptoms you may be able to tell on your own. Otherwise, if you have any concern over an allergic reaction, seek medical care.

Signs of a severe allergic reaction can include, but are not limited to:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling around the eyes or lips
  • Severe fever
  • Hives
  • Paleness / Weakness
  • A fast heart beat or dizziness

In rare instances of allergic reactions, serious side effects may occur. In this case, medical attention from your healthcare provider is necessary. If you have any additional questions about flu shot side-effects, or signs of allergic reactions, please call us directly at (201) 345-3839.
