Annual Flu Shots

As flu season looms in the horizon, the risk of contracting the virus increases significantly as the months continue. The best and most efficient way to prevent this respiratory disease is with a flu shot. It is recommended that everyone receives a flu shot every season for two reasons.

  1. The body’s response to the vaccination declines over time, making the individual more susceptible to the virus.
  2. The flu virus is constantly changing and adapting, every season the flu vaccination is reevaluated and the formulation is usually changed.

The Center for Disease Control recommends that everyone 6 months and older receive a flu shot every season. This is especially true for women who are pregnant, people 65 years and older, and young children. These three groups of people usually have weaker immune systems and are more susceptible to contracting the virus.

The flu vaccination does not prevent the flu immediately; it takes roughly two weeks for your body to respond properly. Your body works with the dead flu cells from the vaccination to create essential antibodies. These antibodies are used to identify the flu virus and fight it off before it becomes a problem.

Receiving a flu shot makes you 60-70% less likely in contracting and spreading influenza. You may experience mild symptoms associated with the flu shot including muscle aches, a low grade fever, and nausea, but these symptoms will subside over time.
