Let’s face it. When a headache strikes, it can have us down for the count. We are less productive and more irritable. Don’t let a headache ruin your day. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Knoxville wants you to know ways to find relief from a headache, as well as when to seek medical attention.

What Is Causing My Headache?

There are many reasons for a headache to occur. It could be because of an allergen, or it could be brought on by emotional stress. Skipping meals, having a change in sleep pattern and even taking certain medications are also reasons for headaches. In addition, poor posture can cause neck or back strain, which can lead to a headache. Therefore, it is best to practice good posture on a daily basis—both when standing and sitting.

Common Types of Headaches

  • Migraines
  • Tension headaches
  • Cluster headaches
  • Exertional headaches
  • Hypnic headaches

When Should I Seek Medical Attention for a Headache?

If you have three or more headaches a week, it might be best to talk to a physician about your symptoms, since there could be an underlying medical condition to blame. Also, if you are having to take medication to alleviate a headache every day or your headache is only getting worse rather than better, it is time to talk to a doctor about your headaches.

Headache Treatment Tips

  • Rest in a quiet, dark room.
  • Use a hot or cold compress on back of the neck or on the forehead.
  • Massage the temples.
  • Drink some caffeine.
  • Take over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, acetaminophen and aspirin.
