How Can I Stay Safe During Flu Season?

"

With COVID-19 affecting communities now more than ever, the flu is the last thing on everyone’s mind. It is important to note that the flu affects millions of people each year, and COVID is no exception to that. It is possible to have both COVID and the flu at the same time. AFC Urgent Care Lyndhurst offers flu vaccinations to any patients over six months of age.

What are flu symptoms?

Flu symptoms are very similar to COVID symptoms. The largest difference between COVID and the flu is that flu symptoms show up suddenly and altogether. These symptoms can include:

  • Fever, with or without body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose

There is no specific treatment for the flu, but getting a flu shot can minimize the severity of your symptoms. Typically, the flu will resolve itself in about a week, but it is possible to speed up that process with proper rest and hydration. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen can help with pain and help reduce a fever. Be sure to monitor your symptoms to watch for the development of other complications, such as pneumonia. If you are experiencing shortness of breath or persistent pain in your chest, you should immediately seek medical attention.

Can I prevent the flu for myself this season?

Like every year, getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu. This is also the best way to keep others around you safe, such as the elderly or small children. The flu can be life-threatening to these groups, so it’s important for everyone to do their part. For the most part, anyone over six months can get a flu vaccine. The CDC offers information for those who are not able to get a flu shot.

In addition to getting vaccinated, there are other ways you can stay safe from the flu. Always avoid others who are sick, or if you are sick. The flu is highly contagious, so maintain a distance from others who are showing symptoms. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and avoid touching your face. This can help stop the spread of potential germs to your mouth. Getting at least 8 hours of rest each night can help keep your immune system at its best.
