Are Mesenteric Adenitis and Appendicitis the Same?

"

It can be tough to tell the difference between mesenteric adenitis and appendicitis. Both conditions cause similar symptoms, but the latter is much more serious than the former.

Read on to learn more about both from our AFC Urgent Care Ooltewah team!

What Is Mesenteric Adenitis?

Mesenteric adenitis refers to the swelling of the lymph nodes in the abdomen. It’s often caused by a viral or bacterial infection in the intestines, which then causes the lymph nodes to swell up as they try to prevent the infection from spreading to the rest of the body. Although it can affect anyone at any age, it usually affects children and teens under the age of 16.

If you or your child experiences the symptoms we’ve listed below, you’re likely dealing with mesenteric adenitis.

Common Mesenteric Adenitis Symptoms

  • Pain in the abdomen, often on the lower right side
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

What Is Appendicitis?

The inflammation of the appendix, a tiny pouch that hangs from the right side of the colon, is known as appendicitis. Appendicitis is a serious condition that can lead to a ruptured appendix, which is potentially fatal.

Although both mesenteric adenitis and appendicitis commonly induce discomfort on the lower right side of the abdomen, there is one way to tell the two apart. Mesenteric adenitis symptoms usually appear after a viral or bacterial infection, whereas appendicitis symptoms appear suddenly and are not preceded by any other infections. If you or your child have any of the symptoms described below, get medical attention immediately.

Common Appendicitis Symptoms

  • Sudden pain that begins on the right side of the lower abdomen
  • Sudden pain that begins around the navel and often shifts to your lower right abdomen
  • Pain that worsens if you cough, walk or make other jarring movements
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Low-grade fever that may worsen as the illness progresses
