Strep Throat 101

Strep throat is a bacterial infection within the throat and the tonsils. Universal symptoms of strep would include an irritated and inflamed throat. These symptoms can cause severe discomfort such as the inability to swallow, swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, fever and ear infections.

The most successful treatment of a strep throat infection would be a dose of antibiotics. Antibiotics are used to help reduce symptoms within 24-48 hours, as well as completely eliminating the infection from spreading to the rest of your body, as well as others.

These treatments work best if the entire course is completed as instructed by your doctor. It takes 2-3 days for strep to begin, and can last for up to 7 days with or without antibiotics. If strep throat goes untreated without antibiotics, you remain contagious for up to 3 weeks regardless if all symptoms have stopped.
