What Are the Benefits of Getting My Flu Shot?- AFC Urgent Care

Every year, the CDC urges people to get their flu shot, and with concerns about COVID-19 persisting, this year is considered especially crucial. The more people that get the flu shot, the more effective it is—and the less likely we will have a bad flu outbreak on top of the coronavirus pandemic. To help you learn more about the benefits of getting your flu shot and how it can help everyone in your community, your AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway team is here to help.

How Does Getting the Flu Shot Benefit My Community?

Getting the flu shot benefits both you and everyone you come into contact with. Not only will you be less likely to get the flu yourself, but if you do get sick, you will be less contagious and have less severe symptoms than if you had not received the vaccine. This can reduce the likelihood that you will need medical care, as well, reducing the burden on the already overwhelmed medical system.

Ways to Stay Healthy During the Flu Season

  • Wash your hands frequently, for 20 seconds each time.
  • Wear a mask any time you go out in public.
  • Social distance from those not in your household.

Won’t the Flu Shot Make Me Sick?

It is a common misconception that the flu shot will make people feel sick after they receive it. While there will occasionally be some side effects such as soreness at the injection site and even a mild fever, it is impossible for the flu shot to give you the flu in any severity because the flu shot contains only inactivated strains of the flu.

Symptoms of the Flu

  • Headache and body aches
  • Fever and chills
  • Tiredness
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Runny and/or stuffy nose
