How Can I Get Better Sleep?

How Can I Get Better Sleep?- AFC Urgent Care

Did you know? Up to 70% of Americans have trouble sleeping at least once a month. And one out of 10 of us experience insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) every night. That’s a lot of tossing and turning. What’s causing all that lost sleep, and how can we find the rest we want and need? While sleep problems are common, they don’t have to be. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Chapman Highway would like to share some tips for a great night’s sleep.

What’s Stopping Me From Falling (or Staying) Asleep?

Common causes for insomnia include stress, changes in your routine, shift work and a lack of physical activity. Using electronic devices near to bedtime can keep you from drifting off, too. So can drinking alcohol or caffeine, especially in the evening. Additionally, some health conditions can interrupt your sleep. Some medications cause sleeplessness, too. Going through menopause can also cause interrupted sleep.

Health Conditions that Hinder Sleep

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Restless leg syndrome

How Can I Get a Good Night’s Sleep?

Apart from major health issues that could cause insomnia, your sleep health is largely in your hands. It’s important to practice what some doctors call good “sleep hygiene.” This just means habits during the day and at bedtime that can help you fall and stay asleep. Start the morning right by getting up at the same time each day. Get some healthy exercise every day. And after dinner, cut out the alcohol and caffeine. Step away from your television, computer or smartphone, too—screen time is associated with sleep loss.

Creating a Bedtime Routine

  • Turn in about the same time every day.
  • Make sure your bedroom is cool and dark.
  • End with a ritual like a bath or a favorite book.
