Types of COVID-19 Testing to Consider

Ever since the novel coronavirus breakout began in the United States, researchers diligently studied and observed new traits about the virus. In the midst of their new findings, scientists are developing different ways to test people for the virus.

As of now, people can opt for one out of three testing methods. However, both methods cater to different people. The first is a regular coronavirus test. The second is an antibody test, which determines if the individual’s immune system has developed antibodies for the virus. The third is a swab test that tells if your immune system has antibodies or not. Since both tests are for a different audience, one or the other will make sense to you. Nevertheless, both the tests are effective and show accurate results.

The Regular COVID-19 Swab Test

The regular swab test determines if you have the virus or not. A swab is inserted into the nasal passage or mouth to collect a sample, which is then used to detect an active COVID-19 infection.

These tests can take some time to complete, but many urgent care providers including AFC Waltham can provide rapid testing. We’ll explain those a little bit later.

Antibody Test

The antibody test is very interesting. It is a blood test that shows if you contracted the virus in the past or not. It also shows if your body made antibodies in response to the virus or not. If you contract the virus again, the antibodies will identify the virus to activate the immune response.

Your body takes around 1-3 weeks to make antibodies for any virus or infection. For this reason, the result might not be accurate if you just got the virus or you get a test after three weeks.

If your body successfully makes antibodies for the virus, your body may develop immunity to the virus. However, no one is sure to what extent COVID-19 antibodies can protect your body.

The Rapid Infection Test

It is another very effective testing technique to check if you have the virus. This type of test tells if the patient has active COVID-19 infection in their immune system. It also determines if the patient is out of coronavirus danger or not.

A rapid molecular test allows a provider to take a swab of a patient’s nasal or throat to identify an active infection. Most rapid tests can be completed in a few minutes with patient results getting back to them in around 15 minutes after analysis.

COVID-19 is a dangerous virus that is attacking not just peoples’ health, but entire nations’ economies and healthcare systems. While many people recover from the virus without medical assistance, immunocompromised people can develop severe pneumonia-like symptoms.

Nonetheless, if you feel like you have mild symptoms, it will be better that you get help from the telemedicine service. Patients that are likely to have exposure to the virus should consult a healthcare provider to determine their next steps.
