Outdoor Winter Safety

December 23, 2021

The winter season is an excellent time as any to enjoy the outdoors. There are many activities that the whole family can participate in, have a good time, and build lasting memories. However, winter introduces a new set of hazards that you have to be mindful of, from freezing temperatures to slippery surfaces. You must take the necessary precautions to ensure safety first and minimize the risk of injuries.

Knowing some outdoor winter safety measures can help you enjoy the winter season without injuries and allow you to keep your family healthy. Check out these aspects of outdoor winter safety that you should practice.

AFC Urgent Care Waltham can provide you and your loved ones with the care you need this winter. From injuries to illness, we are here to provide you with the necessary treatment.

Dressing Warmly

Winter requires you to dress in warm, dry clothing to prevent heat loss and frostbite. This is particularly important for children under three years old. Dressing in proper winter gear cannot be overemphasized, and that includes hats, clothing, and gloves made of tightly woven fibers (e.g., wool) that provide warmth by trapping warm air against the body. Layering is a good way to protect the body from the cold, so try an absorbent synthetic fabric covering the skin, and on top of that, add a warmer layer and select a water-resistant outer layer.

Opt for wool or wool blend socks that provide insulation even when wet. When dressing kids for the cold, avoid scarves and go with tube-shaped neck warmers to eliminate the risk of strangulation. Water repellant boots and zipped-up jackets are ideal coverings. When dressing for the winter, prioritize protecting vulnerable body parts, like fingers, toes, ears, and nose.

Avoiding Black Ice

Winter tends to create different conditions, including snow, fog, and black ice, caused by freezing temperatures. Black ice can be a hazard for both pedestrians and motorists alike. This thin sheet of ice can create dangerous driving conditions in particular, which is why you should avoid black ice if you can. Make an effort to stay safe by:

  • Staying abreast of the local weather forecast can indicate when you’ll have icy conditions in the area
  • When the temperature is freezing, observe other motorists’ tires for water spray, which would suggest that the road surface is wet. If there’s no tire spray, the roadway may accumulate freezing precipitation.
  • Look out for black ice, although it’s difficult to see. The road that is dark in some areas and lighter in others tends to be an indicator of black ice.
  • Use caution when driving, especially on bridges and overpasses, avoid accelerating and braking, and keep steering straight.

Safety While Shoveling

Winter isn’t quite the same without snow, but snow can be a burdensome winter element that many would rather not have to deal with. Shoveling snow can be tedious, and salting your driveway and walkways before the snow begins can limit the chance of ice forming on the treated surfaces. It’s essential to shovel safely, starting with choosing the right shovel for the job, like an ergonomic shovel that minimizes the level of bending necessary when shoveling, which helps protect your back. Ensure that the shovel is lightweight and of an appropriate size that will help to make the process smoother. For example, a small shovel is better for narrow spaces, while a bigger shovel is better suited for wider areas.

Don’t wait for the snow to stop before you begin shoveling, but do so periodically so the snow is easier to handle. Be smart about shoveling and push, don’t lift the snow when possible to minimize the risk of bodily strain. If you must lift the snow, keep your feet stable at hip-width apart and bend from your knees without twisting your torso. Take breaks every 20 or 30 minutes, particularly on icy days and when the snow is wet and heavy. The winter season is full of fun activities as well as different hazardous conditions. Winter safety requires you to be vigilant. Staying alert and taking preventive measures can ensure the safety of you and your family this winter.
