Cold Weather Problems… FROSTBITE!

The cold weather is here and care has to be taken to prevent, recognize, and treat cold-related injury to exposed areas, typically fingers, toes, ears, and nose. This is due to constriction of the blood vessels, depriving oxygen to these parts. “Frostnip” is a milder, reversible precursor to Frostbite, which can lead to actual tissue death.
The symptoms typically include throbbing, burning, tingling, and numbness. There will be a color change from white to red then, if untreated, dark red/purple.
Prevention is the first step! Keep these areas covered with layers if needed. Mittens are generally more effective than gloves since keeping areas together conserves heat more effectively.
If symptoms persist, rewarm as soon as possible and seek medical attention.
