What Should I Know About Gastrointestinal Infections?- AFC Urgent Care

Not all tummy troubles are created equal. Some will go away quickly and are results of eating something that doesn’t agree with your system, but some are actually signs of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders or infections.

What Are GI Infections?

Gastrointestinal infections are infections of the digestive system and GI tract that are caused by either bacteria, viruses or parasites. Most GI infections are relatively short-lived, as the infection and symptoms typically go away in just a few days. Some infections and symptoms can last for as long as two weeks, though.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Muscle aches
  • Dehydration
  • Headache
  • Mucus or blood in the stool
  • Weight loss

Can I Prevent GI Infections?

Just like with anything, GI infections can’t totally be prevented, but there are many things you can do to dramatically lower your risk of dealing with them. We’ve listed some effective prevention tactics in the section below.

If you do believe you have a GI infection, though, make sure to drink lots of fluids and to stay hydrated. Don’t hesitate to visit our AFC center as well if you feel like you need medical attention!

Ways to Prevent GI Infections

  • Maintain a healthy diet. Add fiber, lower salt intake, drink lots of water and eat a variety of whole foods rather than processed foods.
  • Stay active. Getting at least 150 minutes per week of physical activity can put you on the right path to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly—at least twice a day for 20 seconds at a time.
