What Causes Mono?
Mono can be caused by a variety of viruses, but the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the most common cause. Mono is often known as the “kissing disease” because it is spread by bodily fluids such as saliva. By the age of 35, about 90% of people will have had mono; however, many will simply be carriers of the virus rather than experiencing symptoms.
Despite this, many people who contract the virus will have mono symptoms, which we’ve mentioned below.
Common Mono Symptoms
- Extreme fatigue
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Head and body aches
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits
- Swollen liver or spleen or both
- Rash
How Long Do Mono Symptoms Last?
Symptoms typically last between two to four weeks. However, in certain circumstances, people may continue to feel tired for several weeks. According to the CDC, the symptoms of infectious mononucleosis might linger for six months or more in some people. The chances of this happening are rare, though, and it would be extremely important to seek medical attention to determine the cause of the lasting symptoms.
While mono is a virus that must be allowed to run its course, there are certain things you can do to lessen the severity of your symptoms, which we’ve outlined below.
