How Long Will I Be Infectious With the Flu?

Who wants to spend their fall or winter stuck at home with the flu? No one! But the reality is, up to 20% of Americans will be diagnosed with the flu this year.

Our team at AFC Urgent Care South Charlotte wants you to be aware of the early signs of the flu, as well as how long you can expect to be sick with the flu virus.

How Contagious Is the Flu?

Believe it or not, you are actually contagious with the flu the day before you start exhibiting any symptoms. Then, once you become sick, you are usually contagious for another five to seven days.

Therefore, you want to make sure you are always doing your best to prevent the flu, as well as seeking medical attention as soon as flu symptoms appear.

Signs & Symptoms of the Flu

  • Chills
  • Sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Nasal congestion
  • Sore throat
  • Fever over 100.4 F
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Dry, persistent cough

How Long Does the Flu Last?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the flu virus can last for around three to seven days in most people, including children.

While symptoms like fever and headache might go away after a few days, fatigue and a cough can linger a bit longer—for around two weeks. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to find relief.

Flu Treatment

  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Take an antiviral medication, if prescribed.
  • Take OTC medications to ease specific symptoms.
