Signs You Have the Flu

August 7, 2015

As the flu season comes into full effect, it’s important to know the symptoms you should look out for. If you notice any early flu symptoms, you may be able to isolate to avoid infecting those around you. You may even be ready to begin treating the illness before it turns into vomiting, dehydration, and high fever that you can’t control.

The First Symptoms

Some of the earliest symptoms of the flu include:
Fatigue – sudden onset fatigue may be confused for a common cold, but if the fatigue persists, you should assume it’s the flu. Your muscles may feel weak, and you’ll likely become so mentally fatigued that focusing at work or school becomes a challenge.

Cold chills – if you begin suffering from cold chills, don’t just blame the cold weather. This is one of the first symptoms that separate the flu from the common cold. Cold chills often happen before a fever sets in, so take the warning from your body seriously and wrap up in some blankets!

Aches and pains – it’s easy to blame aches and pains on other activities or factors in life, but if you experience all over body aches suddenly, it’s likely a sign of the flu. You can treat these aches and pains with Tylenol, water, and lots of rest. The Tylenol will help to prevent or lower a fever too, which often comes along with the aches!

Irritated throat – If you begin noticing a sore or irritated throat, it’s time to stock up on tea and honey! Look for an uncomfortable feeling when you swallow food or drinks as that’s often the first-time people notice it. The irritation may be caused by swelling or coughing.

Coughing – a persistent cough is annoying, but it’s also one of the first symptoms of the flu. If you notice a persistent cough begin treating it with cough drops and cough syrup before it gets worse. After a few days of coughing, you might start to feel a sore throat or tightness in your chest.

Low-grade fever – in the early stages of the flu, you’ll begin to run a low heat. Check your temperature regularly if you suspect you have the flu. As the illness progresses, the fever will easily reach over 100, but you can treat it at home with Tylenol. If the heat continues to rise, it’s time to seek medical attention.

Nausea or diarrhea – the flu is notorious for coming with annoying and painful gastrointestinal problems, and it’s often the first sign that really gets someone’s attention. If you notice these symptoms, you should begin hydrating immediately to avoid dehydration as the symptoms worsen.
