Healthy Habits for Better Hydration
Did you know that, for an average adult, your body is made of 60% water? This water is mostly contained in the cells which need water to live. Our vital organs are also made up of different amounts of water. The brain, lungs, heart, liver, kidneys and even our bones contain large amounts of water. Water is essential to the body because it helps deliver vitamins and minerals to the cells, regulates body temperature, helps the digestive process run more efficiently and lubricates the joints.
So, how much water do we really need?
We’ve all heard that drinking 8 8oz. glasses a day is ideal. But, depending on activity levels, age, and temperatures that you are exposed to, that may not be enough. In general, you should try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day.
How do you know if you are dehydrated?
If you are concerned that you are not drinking enough water, check your urine. If your urine is usually colorless or light yellow, you are well hydrated. If your urine is a dark yellow or amber color, you may be dehydrated.
How do we stay hydrated? Try incorporating some of these healthy habits throughout the day:
- Start your day with a glass of water when you first wake up.
- Strive to drink only water at each meal (or at least have one glass of water before drinking other beverages).
- Limit your alcohol consumption because it leads to dehydration.
- Keep a reusable water bottle at your desk during the workday.
- If you struggle with the taste of water, infuse it with fruit or cucumber slices.
- Track your water intake to help you reach your daily goals.
- Remember that many fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of water so eat plenty of your seasonal favorites!
Your body depends on water to survive. So, drink up and enjoy a healthier you by staying hydrated!
