Travel vaccinations help to ensure that you, and your family members, are efficiently protected from all airborne illnesses and viruses during international travel. But many families don’t fully understand why travel vaccines are necessary, the diseases they protect from specifically, and the process on how to get family members an updated travel vaccine.

That is why AFC Urgent Care Bedford is here to ensure that you know everything about travel vaccines and why you should get one before any international trips:

Why you’ll need some of these common travel vaccines

Travel vaccinations are specialty vaccines for travelers that are visiting a new country with diseases not common in their home nation. Basically, a travel vaccine prepares you to visit a country that has diseases you haven’t built up an immunity too.

In other parts of the world, people are at high risk for yellow fever and other diseases not common in the United States. International travelers visiting the United States may also get their own version of travel vaccines at home for diseases not found in their country.

A list of common travel vaccines as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) includes:

  • Cholera
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis E
  • Encephalitis
  • Yellow Fever
  • Typhoid Fever

Without the adequate travel vaccines, a traveler is at a significant risk of catching any of these diseases. To plan for international trips the CDC recommends the following steps:

  1. Visit an urgent care center, local walk-in clinic, or similar medical provider to get your travel vaccine.
  2. Plan at least four weeks in advance to get an updated travel vaccination. This is enough time for your body to build up the necessary immunity for your trip.
  3. Always double check if you’re required to get the yellow fever vaccine. Yellow fever are some of the most common vaccines and are likely required by several countries before travel. Travelers are required to get their yellow fever vaccine 10 days before their travel date at a minimum.
