The Symptoms And Differences Between RSV and Flu

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. Some people, such as people 65 years and older, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at higher risk of serious flu complications.  There are two main types of influenza (flu) viruses: types A and B. The influenza A and B viruses that routinely spread in people (human influenza viruses) are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year.

Some symptoms may include

  • Elevated fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

While most individuals recover from the flu, it can lead to severe complications, particularly among those with compromised immune systems or preexisting medical conditions.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization. Vaccines are available to protect older adults from severe RSV. Monoclonal antibody products are available to protect infants and young children from severe RSV. some symptoms may include:

  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Fever
  • Breathing difficulties

Prevention Tips On How To Avoid The Flu And RSV

Taking proactive steps to prevent the flu and RSV is essential, and the following measures can be beneficial:

For the Flu:

  • The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.
  • Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October. Please note that we also offer “fluzone” high dose flu shots for seniors and  those 65 and up.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • For the flu, The CDC recommends that people stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone except to get medical care or other necessities. Fever should be gone without the need to use a fever-reducing medicine.

For RSV:

  • The CDC recommends all children younger than 8 months receive nirsevimab to protect them in their first RSV season.
  • Get a Nasal swab RSV test at AFC Urgent Care Worcester
  • RSV vaccines can help protect adults 60 years and older from RSV disease. Older adults are at greater risk than young adults for serious complications from RSV because immune systems weaken with age.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your shirt sleeve, not your hands
