Tips and Tricks For the Heat

May 16, 2023

As summer approaches, learn how to protect yourself from the sun and the heat. By taking the proper precautions, everyone can safely enjoy their fun in the sun!

Summer is approaching along with warmer weather in the Pacific NW. After a long wet winter and spring, there is excitement for most of us. That said, it’s important to take precautions to protect ourselves from the sun’s harmful rays and the overall heat itself. Prolonged exposure to either sun or high temperatures can lead to symptoms such as sunburn, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Because of all these factors, it is crucial to take the necessary measures to protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun and heat.

One of the most important steps to take when spending time outside this time of year is to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen helps to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that can cause sunburn, skin aging, and even lead to skin cancer down the road. When choosing a sunscreen, it is important to choose one that offers broad-spectrum protection. Broad-spectrum means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, a sunscreen with a high SPF rating of at least 30 is recommended to ensure adequate protection.

Staying properly hydrated in hot weather is also essential to surviving the heat. When temperatures rise, your body loses water weight fast, which can lead to dehydration. To prevent dehydration, it’s important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration is especially important when you’re active or spending time outside in the sun. Diuretics, like coffee and alcohol, should also be avoided as they can further dehydrate your body.

In addition to wearing sunscreen and drinking plenty of fluids, it is also important to cover up when it’s very hot and sunny outside. Jessica Wu, an LA dermatologist also said that “[w]wearing loose-fitting, lightweight clothing that covers your skin can help to protect you from the sun and keep you cool. A wide-brimmed hat can also provide additional protection for your face and neck.’ Many of us are so quick to cover up when temperatures drop, but dressing properly for high heat is something many of us overlook.

Overall, taking the necessary precautions during times of high sun and heat is crucial for maintaining good health and preventing heat-related illnesses. By wearing sunscreen, staying hydrated, and covering up when it’s hot and sunny outside, you can help protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun and heat. When you forget, be mindful of your own body’s signals (like nausea, headache, dizziness, weakness, thirst, etc.) and take breaks in the shade or indoors when necessary. Everyone wants to have some fun in the sun, but it’s important to have that fun while being safe and remaining protected!
