When to See a Provider for Ear Cleaning
Ears usually clean themselves. Earwax (cerumen) protects the ear canal, fights bacteria and keeps dirt and water out, so you should not clean your ears if you do not need to.
Sometimes wax builds up faster than it clears. When it gets thick enough to block sound from reaching the eardrum, a provider can remove it using softening drops, gentle irrigation or small instruments, depending on what your ear needs.
