Fall Weather Brings Fall Illnesses

Fall Weather Brings Fall Illnesses

September 22 cues the official beginning of fall, and with it, tales of former football glory, pies almost as varied in flavor as they are in occasion and family cookouts that will be talked about for generations to come.

Sadly, fall also brings with it a unique set of health challenges. Although autumn can be a tough time to keep your health as a priority, it’s important to take care of yourself and the people around you.

Here are a few health issues that come with the crisp weather:

1) Seasonal flu

When you think of the flu, you probably think of a cold February day, right? It’s time to think again. The flu season begins as early as October and can last until March. If you’ve ever had the flu, you know you don’t want it again—and protecting yourself is as simple as getting a flu shot each year.

2) Fall allergies

Have you ever heard your neighbors talk about the pollen in the air? What they’re referring to is the substance that many plants release. This substance often triggers fall allergies in those around it, causing runny noses, sneezing and coughing fits, among other symptoms.

3) Norovirus

Norovirus is a stomach virus that typically strikes in fall. It affects more than 20 million people in the United States each year, causing cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.
