Yeast infections are extremely common among women, with nearly 75% of women experiencing one at some point in their lives. If you haven’t had a yeast infection, it’s important to know what they are, what causes them and what you can do about them, since these infections are so common.

Our AFC Urgent Care Fountain City team provides further information on yeast infections below, so keep reading!

What Is a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection, or Candidiasis, is a fungal infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Candida normally lives inside the body (in places such as the mouth, throat, gut and vagina) and on skin without causing any problems. However, sometimes Candida can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the vagina changes in a way that encourages its growth.

We’ve listed the common symptoms of a yeast infection below.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

  • Itching, burning or irritation of the vagina or vulva
  • Pain or soreness in the vagina
  • Vaginal burning with intercourse or urination
  • A thick, white, odorless discharge that resembles cottage cheese, or a watery discharge
  • Rash

When Will a Yeast Infection Go Away?

If a yeast infection is mild, it will usually clear up after a few days. More severe yeast infections, however, can last for up to two weeks.

If for some reason a yeast infection is left untreated, it won’t cause any serious long-term medical complications, like infertility or scarring. Yeast infections are uncomfortable and can cause discharge and burning, but they do not cause permanent damage. Additionally, the best treatment for a yeast infection is typically with anti-fungal medicine. Other adequate treatments include OTC medicated creams or suppositories for yeast infections.

Ways to Prevent a Yeast Infection

  • Avoid using scented tampons and pads, vaginal deodorants and perfumed feminine hygiene products.
  • Avoid douching. Douching washes away the good, healthy bacteria in the vagina, and throws off the vagina’s natural balance.
  • Wear breathable underwear. Cotton is your best choice, as it doesn’t hold onto heat or moisture and will keep the genital area dry.
  • Use antibiotics only when you have to. You don’t need them for conditions like a cold, because they don’t do anything against a virus. If you don’t have to, don’t take them.
  • Manage your diabetes. If you have it, be sure to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels and keep them under control.
