How Do I Know If I Am at Risk for Glaucoma?- AFC Urgent Care

The truth of the matter is that we are all at risk for being diagnosed with glaucoma. But some people are at a higher risk of the disease than others. Which is why during Glaucoma Awareness Month this January, our team at AFC Urgent Care Chattanooga wants you to learn more about the eye disease that affects approximately 3 million people living in the United States.

How Serious of an Eye Disease Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is actually the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Because of the seriousness of the eye condition, it is important to recognize symptoms of glaucoma at the earliest stage possible. There are a number of signs of glaucoma, such as severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision and halos around lights. If left untreated, you can lose your peripheral vision and eventually become blind. While we are all at risk, certain groups of people have an increased risk.

Risk Factors of Glaucoma

  • Age 60 or older
  • African American
  • High myopia
  • Diabetes
  • Eye surgery or injury
  • High blood pressure
  • Use of corticosteroids

Can You Prevent Glaucoma?

Unfortunately, there are really no steps you can take to prevent glaucoma. However, if you’re diagnosed with the condition, there are treatments available to slow down the progression of the eye disease. Early detection and treatment is important. If it has been over a year since your last eye exam, make an appointment in 2020. While glaucoma has no cure, the progression of the disease can be limited with prompt treatment, protecting your vision.
