DOT Physicals in St. Petersburg at AFC Urgent Care

Why Choose AFC for Your DOT Physical?

If you’re a commercial vehicle driver, transportation physicals are a necessary and important part of your job. But if you're honest about it, they're probably a little bit of a hassle, too. Every two years, you need to visit a doctor to get their stamp of approval so you can get back to work.

AFC handles countless DOT physicals every year, and we know how to get them done efficiently so you can get the necessary paperwork submitted on time. Best of all, you don’t even need an appointment – just stop right in whenever it’s time for your next exam.

What Do We Look for During Transportation Physicals?

A few of the things that we'll look at during your physical include:

  • Your vision and hearing
  • A test of your urine to screen for any undiagnosed problems
  • Your physical health, e.g., weight, lung health, blood pressure, balance, and so forth

If your employer requires a drug or alcohol screening, we can get that taken care of as well. Along those lines, we can make sure you’re up-to-date on your vaccines, keeping you safer while you’re on the road.

Important Information Regarding Pass/Fail of DOT Physicals:

The most common reasons for being disqualified on a DOT physical are:

  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Uncontrolled sugar in the urine
  • Use of prohibited medications

The good news for drivers is that these are all controllable and manageable health conditions. In addition, drivers can qualify for special waivers if they demonstrate an active effort to treat these conditions.

Other reasons for failing a DOT exam can involve having any condition that would cause a loss of the ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely, including the loss or impairment of limbs, poor vision, monocular vision, insulin controlled diabetes, neuropathy, high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, mental disorders or use of certain drugs.

DOT medical cards historically have been issued for 2 years. However, your medical examiner may issue a card for one year (or even less), if you have a medical condition that requires monitoring, such as hypertension.
