COVID-19 Symptoms in Kids

March 10, 2021

COVID-19 most commonly impacts adults and those with risk factors such as respiratory diseases, but children of all ages can become infected with the coronavirus. Most kids infected with COVID-19 don’t show the same intense symptoms that adults experience, but it’s still essential to understand and recognize the signs of coronavirus in kids.

Is Your Child at Risk of Coronavirus Infection?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, about 13% of coronavirus cases in the United States occur in children. Children under the age of 14 are less likely to contract the virus than people above 20.

Most Common COVID-19 Symptoms in Kids

The majority of children who experience COVID-19 demonstrate mild and cold-like symptoms. Many parents mistake coronavirus infection with allergies or the common cold. Most children recover from their mild symptoms within one to two weeks.

Look out for these symptoms to identify a potential case of coronavirus in your child:

  • Fever or chills
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • Loss of appetite, taste, or smell

Is There a Vaccine?

Children younger than 12 do not yet have a vaccine for COVID-19, but at this time, at least one vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech is available to children 16 and older. Other pharmaceutical companies have begun enrolling children as young as 12 in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials to test the coronavirus vaccine’s safety and efficacy in younger kids.
