Could I Have COVID-19, or Is It the Flu?

January 10, 2021

In past years, symptoms of the common cold and the flu were often mistaken for each other. But since the coronavirus pandemic emerged in early 2020, the similarities and differences between COVID-19 and the flu have caused far more concern.

If you’re feeling ill, it’s important to identify whether your symptoms indicate COVID-19 or the flu. Here are the main points to remember.

At First, It’s Hard To Tell the Difference.

Unfortunately, it isn’t easy to differentiate between COVID-19 and the flu in the early stages of your illness. The two conditions are caused by different viruses but share a number of symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Body aches
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

This is why it’s so important to pay special attention to the unique symptoms of COVID-19 that set it apart from the flu.

How To Spot COVID-19

Even if you have all of the hallmark symptoms of the flu, it could be the coronavirus if you start to experience other symptoms. In most cases, those with COVID-19 start to experience these symptoms two to five days after infection:

  • Loss of taste and/or smell
  • Red, swollen eyes
  • Skin rashes

It’s also a sign of COVID-19 if your symptoms last longer than the average flu. Coronavirus patients report that they experienced symptoms for weeks or even months, rather than just days like seasonal influenza.

What To Do If You Think You Have COVID-19

Since it is so hard to determine if you have Covid-19 or the flu, it’s best if you contact AFC Urgent Care immediately for a COVID-19 test. Wear a mask, isolate yourself from others, and remain in quarantine until your test results come back. Your doctor may recommend an antiviral treatment to ease your symptoms as well.
