Are there differences between COVID-19 and influenza?
While COVID-19 shares some similarities to the flu, they typically end with the fact that they are both upper respiratory infections and share some similar symptoms. COVID-19 is caused by person-to-person or surface-to-person transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which was only detected at the end of 2019. The flu is caused by a series of influenza viruses that continuously evolves throughout the year, which is why an annual flu shot is recommended to provide immunization each flu season. Both viruses can be fatal; however, the flu can be prevented with a flu shot and COVID-19 has been a pandemic with over 170,000 deaths in the United States in 2020. Is it possible to have the flu and COVID-19 at once?
Yes. However, it is unknown how common this may be and what side effects may stem from having both at once. Doctors around the world are continuing to perform research to determine what can happen in this case. By getting a flu shot, you will be able to protect yourself against the influenza virus and narrow down potential diagnoses for your physician, who will be able to advise you and arrange for COVID-19 diagnostic testing. A flu shot cannot be used as protection against COVID-19, but will provide immunity against the current strain of the influenza virus for up to six months, roughly the duration of flu season. Flu shots typically become available in September and can be administered on a walk-in basis. Because the flu shot takes about two weeks to take effect, getting the shot as early as possible allows you time to adjust to the flu shot prior to the virus taking hold in your community.
