Going hand-in-hand with student move-in and the first day of school, the start of flu season occurs in early fall, extending the season through winter to the end of spring. However, the flu virus is not the only threat against your health that you may experience. Read on to learn the symptoms for common fall illnesses and when to visit AFC Urgent Care Southcenter for treatment

Influenza

The flu season starts in October and lasts through the end of May, peaking sometime between January and March. In addition to its symptoms, which include fatigue, fever, headache, coughing, nausea, chills and congestion, the influenza virus can lead to complications including further illness such as pneumonia. The easiest way to combat the flu is by getting the flu shot every year. The flu shot introduces your body to a weakened or dead strain of the current form of the virus, allowing your body to learn how to fight and defeat it without suffering from symptoms. Once you get the flu shot, the chances of you contracting the current strain are very low. The flu shot is the most effective way to prevent getting the virus and is redesigned each year to match the current strain. You can also prevent catching and spreading the flu by frequently washing your hands, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or couching and getting enough sleep.

Common Cold

The cold is one of the most common viruses, with over 3 million cases reported each year. Symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks and spread quickly through your home, classroom or office through contact with contaminated objects, surfaces or people, saliva or when someone sneezes without covering their nose and mouth. Colds can be treated with decongestants and other medications. In order to prevent catching cold and developing symptoms, make sure you wash your hands frequently throughout the day, get enough sleep each night and cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Sore & Strep Throat

A sore throat can be a warning symbol for things to come including flu, cold, allergic reactions, and strep throat. However, a sore throat can also be an illness all on its own. Whether you have a sore throat because of changing temperatures and humidity levels or an upcoming illness, there are ways you can prevent getting sick including using an indoor humidifier for more moist air, using your own utensils and cups and frequently washing and disinfecting your hands.
