While your goal is to have a fun, carefree summer, you also want to make sure you are taking action against skin cancer. Approximately one in every five people living in the United States will receive a skin cancer diagnosis by age 70, which makes it the most common cancer in the United States. Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce your risk of skin cancer—now and in the future. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Fountain City is here to help you have fun in the summer sun while also protecting your skin!

What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, which is usually caused by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. While there are three different types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer.

Signs of Skin Cancer

  • Brown, scaly patches
  • Unusual growth
  • Change in existing mole
  • White, waxy lump
  • Skin spots that are larger than a pencil eraser
  • Skin spots that aren’t symmetrical

Can I Prevent Skin Cancer From Occurring?

Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce your risk of skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 on all exposed skin when outdoors is the best way to prevent skin cancer. But it’s not the only way you can lower your risk.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

  • Avoid tanning, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Get a skin evaluation at least once a year.
  • Stay out of the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. as much as possible.
  • Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, eyelids, scalp, hands and feet.
  • Wear protective sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat.

Do you have a spot on your skin that is questionable, or did you get a bad sunburn over the weekend? Visit AFC Urgent Care Fountain City today for a medical evaluation and treatment plan.
