What Is Mesenteric Adenitis?

Mesenteric adenitis (also known as mesenteric lymphadenitis) is the swelling of the lymph nodes in the abdomen. You can get it at any age, but it’s most common among children and teens.

Mesenteric adenitis is most often caused by a viral or bacterial intestinal infection, which causes the lymph nodes to swell, causing stomach pain and tenderness. We’ve listed its most common symptoms below.

Common Mesenteric Adenitis Symptoms

  • Pain in the abdomen, often on the lower right side
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Are There Certain Things That Increase a Child’s Risk?

Yes, there are. Since mesenteric adenitis is most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection, this means that the condition won’t ever pop up out of the blue. Lymphadenitis always comes after a previous infection, such as a prior stomach virus, cold virus or some type of respiratory infection. Eating pork contaminated with Y. enterocolitica can also cause lymphadenitis.

We’ve listed some of the best ways your child can prevent getting this condition in the section below. Be aware of these steps to protect your child’s health.

Ways to Prevent Mesenteric Adenitis

  • Washing hands regularly with soap
  • Avoiding close contact with someone who is sick
  • Keeping food preparation areas clean to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria
