5 Common Fall Injuries and Illnesses

A woman suffering from seasonal fall allergies seeking care at AFC Urgent Care.

Fall is a beautiful time of the year, but that doesn’t mean illnesses & injuries fade. Learn the 5 common conditions AFC sees the most.

With the summer weather winding down, residents of Fountain City look forward to classic fall activities like picking pumpkins at nearby Oakes Farm, attending college football games, or listening to stories around the bonfire. Autumn is an exciting time of the year and while it’s easy to sit back and enjoy a hot cup of cocoa; the fall season has its fair share of injuries and illnesses.

Don’t let your health take a back seat this season. Here’s five common illnesses and injuries that we see here in Fountain City.

Visit AFC Fountain City today!

1. Shoulder and Knee Injuries

Your shoulders and knees serve a central role in your everyday mobility. Any overhead movement can be attributed to your shoulders, while your knees carry the majority of your body weight. Repetitive use of shoulders and knees means they’re more likely to be injured, especially when participating in fall activities like hiking, hauling firewood, backyard football or simple seasonal cleaning.

To prevent rotator cuff strains, meniscus tears or tendonitis in your knees or shoulders we recommend:

  • Warming up before participating in physical activities.
  • Know your limitations and take a break if you feel overuse setting in.
  • Don’t push through the pain, if it persists or worsens, professional care is advised.

AFC Fountain City has state-of-the-art equipment including in-house digital X-rays. Our providers are ready to assess your knee or shoulder injury, and are eager to help you find a treatment plan that fits your needs.

2. Bonfire and Campfire Burns

Autumn is often marked by s’mores and campfires. Nothing beats a chilly night under the stars. But because fire is often a common variable in fall, we frequently see people with minor burns and eye injuries. Typically, these types of ailments are caused by windy conditions, using the wrong materials or hidden embers.

Our fire safety tips include:

  • Using non-treated wood.
  • Having a water source or fire extinguisher on hand.
  • Ensuring the fire is completely out before leaving the area.
  • Avoid wearing loose clothing that could catch wayward sparks.

Our walk-in clinic can treat minor burns, but if it’s a severe case, visit your closest emergency room.

3. Seasonal Allergies

For some, allergies are a year-round issue and autumn is no different. In Knoxville, we are often battling allergies caused by ragweed, mold from damp leaves, or dust from fall cleaning and heating systems. Think you may have fall allergies?

Here are the signs:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Coughing
  • In extreme cases, sinus infections

Unfortunately, allergies are often unavoidable, but here are a few tips to help you manage your symptoms.

  • Limit outdoor exposure (on high-pollen days).
  • After being outside, remove pollen from your skin and hair by showering.
  • Reduce inside allergens by keeping windows closed.
  • Consider using a HEPA air filter to help with allergies caused by indoor triggers.
  • Use over-the-counter medication (such as antihistamines, decongestants or nasal sprays).

For persistent allergies or for those looking for longer-lasting relief, stop by AFC Fountain City. We offer personalized allergy treatment plans that help minimize the effects of seasonal allergies.

4. Car Accidents

Although it can be scary to think about, car accidents are another common reason patients visit our urgent care. Everyone loves a casual drive to admire the colorful trees, but road-related hazards are very prominent in the fall. Whether it’s due to low visibility, foggy mornings, wet leaves or an increase in wildlife (such as deer), minor injuries from car accidents are bound to happen.

Things to keep in mind when on the road:

  • Keep an eye on the road conditions and adjust your speed when necessary.
  • Maintain general up-keep on your vehicle and always ensure it’s safe to drive before leaving.
  • Make sure your windshield is clear and your headlights are functioning properly.

5. Cuts and Lacerations

During the fall months, AFC Fountain City also sees patients suffering from cuts and lacerations. From pumpkin carving mishaps to firewood cutting gone wrong, accidents like these occur frequently in the fall. Minor cuts can be cared for at home, but if not taken care of properly even small lacerations and cuts can create issues – like infection.

Prevention tips:

  • Use proper tools for the job and keep blades sharp (dull tools are more likely to slip).
  • Wear protective gear when handling sharp objects.
  • Always supervise children when sharp objects are involved.
