How Should I Prepare to Return to My Office After COVID-19?

July 2, 2020

COVID-19 has forced people around the globe to alter the way they move through their daily routines in order to slow the spread and flatten the curve. Many workplaces were closed in the beginning of the pandemic, but some are slowly starting to reopen. If your office is reopening soon, it’s vital that you know how to protect yourself against COVID-19 in the workplace.

Maintaining a Sanitized Workspace

Before you return to work, ask your employer if they have followed all CDC guidelines regarding cleaning and sanitizing. The workplace should be deep cleaned and sanitized before any employees return to work. If the workplace hasn’t been sanitized, ask to continue working from home until it is. Once the initial cleaning is done, it’s your job to help maintain that level of cleanliness. Avoid clutter and unnecessary items on your desk, sanitize commonly touched surfaces like your phone and keyboard, and avoid sharing office supplies with coworkers unless they’re sanitized after each use.

Social Distancing Tips

Social distancing helps to reduce the risk of COVID-19 by limiting the amount of exposure from one person to another. Rearranging the office to allow at least 6 feet between desks is ideal. If this can’t be done, then dividers should be placed between desks and workspaces. Anything that goes directly against social distancing should be cancelled. This includes meetings, eating together in the break room, and other areas where employees congregate.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is important for every employee in the building. While personal hygiene should always be a priority, it’s important now more than ever. You should wash your hands frequently throughout the day and use hand sanitizer when you’re unable to wash your hands. Cover all of your coughs and sneezes with your elbow, not with your hand. Try to avoid touching your face throughout the day. If you will be in contact with other employees, wear a mask to further protect yourself.

COVID-19 Screening

COVID-19 screening measures are helpful to limiting the number of employees who may have been exposed into the workplace. Daily screening is ideal. This daily screening should include a temperature check before entering the building, as well as a short questionnaire to identify if you’ve been in contact with someone who has COVID-19.
