How Can I Keep My Bladder Healthy?

April 27, 2021

Do you feel as though you are always running to the bathroom? Maybe you feel like you need to urinate, but when you get to the restroom nothing happens.

Bladder issues are common among Americans. During Bladder Health Month this November, our team at AFC Urgent Care East Meadow wants to help you understand how you can keep your bladder healthy.

What Does the Bladder Do?

Urine is made in the kidneys and then travels through the urinary tract system to the bladder, where it is stored.

The bladder is small but mighty, lined with layers of muscle designed to stretch and hold urine. When urine leaves the bladder, it goes through the ureters, which carry it out of the body.

Common Bladder Problems

  • Cystitis
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Overactive bladder
  • Interstitial cystitis

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

A urinary tract infection, often referenced as a UTI, is one of the most common bladder health issues. It occurs when bacteria enter the body through the urethra and begin to multiply.

This can lead to an infection in any part of the urinary tract, including the ureters, the urethra, the bladder, and the kidneys.

Treatment for Urinary Tract Infection

  • Take an antibiotic, as prescribed.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Urinate when the need arises.
  • Drink unsweetened cranberry juice.
  • Use probiotics to restore healthy bacteria.
  • Get enough vitamin C.
  • Wipe from front to back after using the restroom.
