What If I Get Stung?

April 30, 2021

It never fails. You are outside having a wonderful time. Then, all of a sudden, you get stung out of nowhere!

Our AFC Urgent Care East Meadow wants to make sure you prevent insect bites and stings as much as possible with these tips!

When Does a Bug Bite Need Medical Attention?

This one's an easy one! If you have a bite or sting that's concerning you, stop by to have it checked out.

Of course, you should also be seen if you have a bite or sting that seems to be worsening, or that's accompanied by symptoms such as fever or rash.

Bug Bite/Sting Prevention

  • Don’t swat at bees, wasps or hornets.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants to cover skin, particularly in high grass where chiggers are common.
  • Do not go barefoot outside.
  • Avoid wearing strong perfume or cologne.
  • Use insect repellent.

Should I Be Concerned About Ticks?

Most tick bites are just tick bites. But there is the potential for them to have more dangerous side effects, since ticks can carry disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 30,000 cases of Lyme disease reported each year. If you find a tick on yourself and experience any of the symptoms outlined below, seek medical attention.

Lyme Disease Symptoms

  • Rashes
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Achy, swollen joints
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Cognitive decline
  • Vision changes
