Can Adults Get Measles? Identifying The Early Signs

April 21, 2025

When most people hear “measles,” they think of a childhood illness long gone thanks to vaccines. But recently, measles has made a comeback, and it’s not just affecting kids. Adults who were never vaccinated or only received one dose of the measles vaccine remain at risk, especially during outbreak seasons. Understanding how measles affects adults, what symptoms to watch for, and how to prevent it can help protect you and those around you.

Yes, Adults Can Get Measles

Although childhood immunizations drastically reduced measles cases for decades, the virus is not eradicated. International travel, pockets of low vaccination rates, and missed immunizations have contributed to a rise in outbreaks in the U.S. – and adults are not immune. If you were born before 1957, you’re generally considered immune because measles was so widespread then. However, if you were born after 1957 and never received both doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, you may be at risk.

Early Signs of Measles in Adults

Measles begins with symptoms that are easily mistaken for a common cold or flu. Adults may be less likely to suspect measles until the rash appears– which means they could unknowingly spread it to others.

Watch for these warming signs:

  • High fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red or watery eyes
  • Fatigue and body aches

Within a few days, more specific signs may develop:

  • Tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth (koplik spots), usually appearing before the rash
  • A red, blotchy rash that generally begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body. Measles rash can last for about a week

The contagious period starts four days before the rash appears and contributes for four days after, making it easy for measles to spread before anyone realizes what’s happening.

Check Your Immunization Status

If you’re unsure whether you’ve had two doses or the MMR vaccine, a quick conversation with a healthcare provider or a blood test can confirm your immunity. The CDC recommends the MMR vaccine for:

  • Adults born after 1957 who haven’t been vaccinated or had measles
  • Healthcare workers
  • College students
  • Children (one does at 12-15 months and another at 4-6 years)
  • International travelers

The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and available at most urgent care centers!
