This winter in New England has been particularly cold and rough. We want to give you some tips on how to prevent frostbite in this bitterly cold New England winter.

Frostbite is a condition which freezes skin and the tissue underneath. Areas most commonly affected are small areas which are exposed such as fingers, nose, and ears. Frostbite ranges from mild to severe. Mild frostbite typically can be treated by warming the skin. Severe frostbite requires immediate medical attention.

Some ways to prevent frostbite include:

  • Limiting time spent outside in cold weather
  • If you must spend an extended time outside, it is recommended to take breaks to warm up
  • Always cover up and dress in multiple layers including a hat or ear muffs to cover your ears.
  • Wear mittens when possible. Gloves if needed, but mittens provide better protection.
  • Watch for signs of frostbite. If mild frostbite symptoms appear, make sure to treat immediately as to prevent it from becoming severe
