Eat (Very) Locally: Tips to Starting Your Very Own Home Garden

"

Each March marks National Nutrition Month. March also happens to be the best month in many parts of the country to begin planting a number of different fruits and vegetables. Get your Spring off on the right foot by starting your very own garden. Many health organizations assert that eating local foods is proven to be far healthier than foods oversaturated with preservatives and additives. Many life-threatening health conditions, including pancreatic cancer, are believed to be correlated with preservative-rich foods according to many different studies.

Some people practice eating locally by purchasing foods  at organic food markets, or eating at restaurants who use exclusively local suppliers. A fun and effective way to ensure you’re eating locally is building your very own home garden. March makes for an ideal time to plant many different fruits and vegetables because the weather’s warming up yet, there’s still enough time for these plants to flourish before the damaging summer sun hinders their growth.

Some fruits and vegetables best planted in March include:

  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumbers
  • Herbs
  • Spinach
  • Beets
  • Corn
  • Cabbage
  • Lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Melons
  • Onions
  • Carrots
  • Peppers
  • Peas
  • Summer Squash

To know when the above fruits and vegetables come into season, keep up to date with our news and updates blog. We’ll continue updating our blog to keep providing tips regarding eating locally and tending your home garden.
