Don’t Let The Flu Scare You

Name something scarier than ghosts and goblins during this time of year: the flu.

Flu season typically starts right before Halloween and can last up until May, with peak season being around January.  With everyone around you coughing, and sneezing, and looking like zombies, it might give you a fright that you’ll get sick, too.

Don’t let getting sick spook you this fall season.  Follow these tips to have a healthy flu season!

Get Your Flu Shot

Getting your flu shot is one of the most effective ways to prevent getting the flu.  Seasonal flu shots are created to help protect you against major strains of the flu that will be prevalent for the season.  The shot is painless, with little-to-no side effects that will keep you protected for the entire season, and won’t actually give you the flu.

Wash Your Hands

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be shocked at how many people forget how important it is to practice good hygiene.  Regularly washing your hands with running water and soap helps prevent the build of germs that can get you sick.  Get into the habit of regularly washing your hands before and after daily activities such as:

  • Using the bathroom
  • Preparing food and eating
  • Handing garbage
  • Caring for sick individuals
  • Shaking hands

Avoid the spread of germs

The cold and the flu both spread rapidly during the fall and winter season, and much of that exposure happens without us even realizing it.  To prevent catching a virus, avoid things like shaking hands with colleagues, and touching hard surfaces that hoard germs and bacteria.  You should also practice coughing or sneezing into your elbow instead of directly into your hands, and encourage your peers to do the same.

Another way to avoid the spread of germs is to regularly cleanse objects and surfaces that you touch daily such as your cell phone, laptop, and counter-tops, and desks, with sanitizing wipes to stop those pesky germs right in their tracks.

Stay home if you’re sick

It may be tempting to go into the office, but if you’re not feeling like your normal self, don’t be afraid to call out sick.  You’ll be able to recuperate without stressing yourself out over what’s coming across your desk.  Without you coughing and sneezing all over the office, your coworkers will thank you.
