Should I Be on the Lookout for COVID-19 This Year?

September 15, 2023

We have dealt with all kinds of illnesses and conditions over the years, and chances are that you have, too. Getting sick from time to time is just a part of life. While you might think that you don’t need to be worried about COVID-19 anymore if you have already had it, you would be wrong.

COVID-19 is still circulating in our community and the different variants can still make you sick, even if you have already recovered from COVID-19 once (or more). We all need to be hyper-vigilant as the cases around us have been spiking in recent weeks.

Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Chattanooga team explains more below about the current COVID-19 symptoms and what to do to reduce your risk of getting sick.

Can COVID-19 Still Make You Seriously Sick?

Yes, unfortunately. The coronavirus is constantly mutating and evolving, and you just never know if the current variant is the one that will personally make you very sick. Anyone is at risk of serious illness, but especially older adults and those with compromised immune systems.

This is one of the reasons why we strongly encourage frequent testing or testing as soon as you get sick. If you do have COVID-19, you can remove yourself from work or school to prevent it from spreading. You can also see if one of the newer antiviral drug treatments would work for you. They come in either a pill form or can be given intravenously and can help people avoid severe symptoms.

The Current Symptoms Associated With COVID-19

  • Sudden fever
  • Chills
  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or muscle aches

How Can I Prevent COVID-19 This Fall?

Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine remains the most reliable way to avoid serious illness. Even if you do contract COVID-19, the vaccine can help minimize your symptoms and help you feel better faster. The latest boosters will be available beginning in late September or October.

Even if you do everything right and you still get sick, remember that isolating yourself is the best thing you can do for your family and our community. It can help stop the spread and could even prevent someone else from getting really sick. Stay hydrated, eat well and rest as much as you can while your body fights this pesky infection.
