5 Signs That You Might Have Strep Throat

April 1, 2023

When a sore throat interrupts your routine, it can be challenging to go about your day. Warm beverages and over-the-counter medications only go so far, especially when you have strep throat. How do you know that you have strep throat? There are five main signs to be aware of. For same-day strep throat diagnosis and treatment options, visit the walk-in clinic at AFC Urgent Care Aurora Saddle Rock.

5 Initial Signs and Symptoms of Strep Throat

If you suspect strep throat, check for these symptoms:

1. Sore Throat

The most apparent symptom of strep throat is a sore throat. You will likely experience pain when swallowing and difficulty eating certain foods. Warm beverages can soothe a sore throat but will not cure strep throat.

2. Fever

Strep throat is an infection; the body naturally increases in heat to fight infections, which is a fever. If you have a sore throat that is not accompanied by a fever, you may still have strep throat.

3. Swollen, Red Tonsils

When looking at your tonsils, they should be pinkish, like the interior of your cheeks or your gums. Red tonsils are indicative of an infection. When the tonsils are also swollen, infection is even more likely.

4. Red Spots or White Patches

Red spots in your mouth are called petechiae and appear much like a rash. These spots are commonly on the roof of the mouth and are typically flat, not raised.

Alternatively, white patches may appear when you have strep throat. Usually, these patches will appear on the tonsils or throat.

5. Swollen Lymph Nodes

The lymph nodes on the side of the neck can become painful or swollen when strep throat is present. To check for swollen lymph nodes, place gentle pressure along the sides of your neck with your fingertips. A swollen lymph node will feel like a soft bump, typically smaller than a grape.

Pushing on an inflamed lymph node can be tender, so if you feel any pain while checking your lymph nodes, they are likely swollen.

How Strep Throat is Diagnosed

The diagnosis of strep throat requires a swab test known as a rapid strep test. It can feel uncomfortable, but fortunately, it doesn't take long. The swab collects fluids from your throat and can determine whether positive or negative rather quickly.

Strep Throat Treatment Options at Urgent Care

Urgent care doctors will prescribe an antibiotic if you receive a positive result after a rapid strep test. Medical professionals may suggest other at-home remedies to soothe your throat while the antibiotic starts to work. Remedies can include:

● Warm beverages

● Honey

● OTC cough medicine

● Gargle salt water

● Eat soup

● Sleep with a humidifier on

You may find it beneficial to seek medical care at urgent care over your primary doctor for strep throat. While many primary care centers have waiting lists, urgent care is a walk-in facility that can see you the same day. Get treatment when you need it at AFC Urgent Care Aurora Saddle Rock.
