Avoid Getting Sick at the Gym

The gym helps you look good and feel good, but if you happen to get sick from working out in a germ-infested environment, you won’t look so good and feel so good if you catch a cold.  Gyms are breeding grounds for germs that can make you sick and put you out for a few days up to a week.  If you plan on being in the gym this upcoming cold and flu season, use these tips to avoid getting sick from the gym.

Bring Your Own Equipment

You obviously cannot lug around a smith machine, but for equipment like yoga mats and lifting belts, you should stick with using your own equipment.  You’re never quite sure of how frequently your gym is cleaning mats, gloves, and other gear, which can be breeding groups for germ.  If you go to a yoga class or boxing gym, it may be a good idea to invest in your own equipment.

Always wear your shoes

You may get temped to take off your shoes for certain workouts, but you should always keep them on to avoid getting dirt and germs on your feet.  If you’re looking to get a barefoot-type experience, you can try out Vibram Five Fingers or hit your barre or yoga class in a pair of stylish Nike Studio Wraps.

Always wash your hands

From using the treadmill to grabbing dumbbells, your hands are holding tons of germs that cause infections and illnesses.  When you’re working out, avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, and mouth) between sets and wash your hands immediate following a sweat session.

Always wash your clothes

You may have only worn your gym clothes for max two hours, but even if your clothes appear clean, play it safe and give them a wash.

Skip the gym if you’re sick

You can easily find at-home workouts for moments when you’re too sick to make it to the gym.  Keep basic fitness tools like free-weights at home if you’re still in the mood to workout.
